Split Body Double Flange Butterfly Valve — PTFE Lined Body, Polished Stainless Steel Disc

The split body double flange butterfly valve with full PTFE lining and mirror-polished stainless steel disc from Laux Valve is engineered for the most demanding corrosive fluid applications in chemical processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and petrochemical industries.

The two-piece split body design allows the PTFE lining to be fully encapsulated over all wetted surfaces, providing complete isolation between the corrosive process fluid and the metal body. The mirror-polished stainless steel disc minimizes friction, reduces operating torque, and prevents fouling — ensuring reliable bubble-tight shut-off in aggressive chemical service.

Key Features

  • Split Body Design — Two-piece body construction with through-bolts allows easy PTFE liner installation and replacement. Body splits along the disc axis for full access to internal components.
  • Full PTFE Body Lining — Complete polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) lining on all wetted body surfaces. Minimum lining thickness 3mm. Inert to nearly all industrial chemicals including strong acids, caustics, and solvents.
  • Mirror-Polished Stainless Steel Disc — Polished to Ra ≤ 0.4µm surface finish. Reduces friction against PTFE liner, prevents particle adhesion, and facilitates clean-in-place (CIP) procedures.
  • Double Flange Configuration — Flanged connections on both body ends (ASME B16.5 Class 150 / EN 1092-2) enable dead-end isolation service.
  • 316L Stainless Steel Disc (Standard) — Low-carbon 316L SS provides superior corrosion resistance in welded and high-temperature conditions. Optional Hastelloy C276, Monel, or Titanium available.
  • Blowout-Proof Stem — Anti-blowout stem design with internal thrust washer and PTFE chevron packing for zero fugitive emissions.
  • ISO 5752 / API 609 Compliant — Face-to-face dimensions per ISO 5752 Series 1 (short pattern) and API 609 Table 1.
  • 100% Pressure Tested — Hydrostatic shell test at 1.5x rated pressure and seat leakage test per API 598 Class A zero leakage.

PTFE Lining vs Rubber Lining vs Unlined

Property PTFE Lined EPDM Rubber Lined Unlined (SS Disc)
Chemical Resistance Excellent — inert to most chemicals Limited — water, mild chemicals Moderate — depends on disc alloy
Max Temperature 200°C (PTFE) / 260°C (PFA) 130°C 200°C+ (depends on material)
Friction Coefficient Very Low (0.05-0.10) Moderate (0.5-1.5) Metal-to-metal (higher torque)
Fouling Resistance Excellent — non-stick surface Moderate Good (polished surface)
Food/Pharma Suitability Excellent — FDA compliant Limited Good (with polish)

Why Polished Stainless Steel Disc?

A mirror-polished stainless steel disc offers distinct advantages over standard machined or coated discs:

  • Reduces operating torque — The polished surface minimizes friction between the disc and PTFE liner, reducing actuator size and cost
  • Prevents fouling — The ultra-smooth finish (Ra ≤ 0.4µm) prevents chemical buildup and crystalline deposits
  • Enables CIP/SIP — Easy to clean in place, essential for pharmaceutical and food processing
  • Extends seat life — Less abrasive wear on the PTFE liner compared to rougher disc surfaces
  • Corrosion resistant — 316L low-carbon SS provides excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding

Applications

  • Chemical processing (acids, caustics, solvents, chlorides)
  • Pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Food and beverage processing (CIP systems)
  • Fine chemical and specialty chemical production
  • Petrochemical and refinery auxiliary systems
  • Water treatment chemical dosing (acids, coagulants, polymers)
  • Semiconductor and electronics manufacturing

Available Options

  • Stem Sealing: PTFE chevron packing / Graphite packing / Live-loaded (fugitive emission)
  • Operation: Lever / Gearbox / Pneumatic / Electric with positioner

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a split body butterfly valve?

A split body (or U-type) butterfly valve has a two-piece body held together by through-bolts. The body splits along the disc axis, allowing the PTFE lining to be fully molded over all internal surfaces. This design is essential for lined valves because it enables complete encapsulation of the metal body by the corrosion-resistant lining.

What is the advantage of a polished SS disc in a PTFE lined valve?

A mirror-polished disc (Ra ≤ 0.4µm) significantly reduces friction against the PTFE liner, lowering operating torque by 15-25% compared to standard machined discs. The polished surface also prevents chemical fouling, enables clean-in-place (CIP) procedures, and extends both disc and liner service life.

What temperature range can this valve handle?

With PTFE lining, the operating range is -40°C to +200°C (-40°F to +392°F). For higher temperature applications up to 260°C (500°F), PFA lining is recommended.

Can this valve be used for dead-end service?

Yes. The double flange design supports dead-end isolation service at full pressure rating. The PTFE liner extends beyond the flange face to create a gasket-like seal, eliminating the need for separate flange gaskets in most installations.

What is the difference between PTFE, FEP, and PFA linings?

PTFE is the standard lining with excellent chemical resistance up to 200°C. FEP offers lower permeability and a smoother surface, ideal for high-purity applications up to 150°C. PFA provides the highest temperature resistance up to 260°C and the best mechanical properties for demanding services.
