What is a U-Section Butterfly Valve?

A U-Section (U-Type) Butterfly Valve is a resilient seated butterfly valve constructed with an extended U-shaped body, engineered for precise fitting between pipeline flanges.

Unlike conventional wafer butterfly valves, its unique U-section structure delivers superior flange alignment, steadier sealing performance and simplified installation, making it well-suited for DIN and EN standard piping systems.

The elongated U-body evenly spreads bolt tightening loads across the flange connection. This minimizes mechanical stress imposed on the valve seat during assembly and extends the service life of the seal. For this reason, U-Type butterfly valves are ideal for working conditions that demand frequent maintenance, dependable isolation, and consistent performance amid fluctuating pipeline loads.

Laux U-Section Butterfly Valves are available with EPDM, NBR, PTFE, FKM, and other seat materials, along with multiple body, disc, and shaft material options to meet different industrial applications.

Butterfly Valve Flow Coefficient Kv & Pressure Drop Reference Data

All concentric lug butterfly valves and wafer butterfly valves are equipped with complete opening-angle Kv flow coefficient table and GPM-PSI pressure drop nomograph, supporting metric & imperial dual-system pipeline design calculation for global industrial projects. Flow coefficient Kv represents the fluid throughput capacity of the valve; higher Kv value brings lower pipeline pressure loss and less operation energy consumption.

Table Instruction: Small opening 10°~30° for precise flow throttling; medium opening 40°~70° for circulating water regulation; 90° full open delivers maximum Kv value with minimum flow resistance for main pipeline isolation.

2. GPM & PSI Pressure Drop Nomograph Chart

Figure 1: Flow Rate & Pressure Drop Nomograph for Concentric Butterfly Valve

The pressure drop curve chart adopts US imperial units, with horizontal axis for flow rate GPM and vertical axis for differential pressure (PSI / Feet water head). Diagonal slant lines correspond to matching Kv/Cv flow coefficients, helping North American and ANSI standard clients quickly calculate pipeline medium pressure loss.

  • Horizontal axis: Flow range 100 ~ 100,000 Gallons Per Minute, covers DN50~DN600 full size flow demand;
  • Vertical axis dual units: PSI pressure difference and Feet water head, convenient for direct conversion of pipeline design parameters;
  • Operation logic: Locate flow GPM vertically intersect Kv diagonal line, horizontally read pressure drop value to judge system energy loss.

3. Combined Application of Kv Table & Pressure Drop Curve

  • Step 1: Confirm working opening angle (throttling / full open), extract Kv value from the table;
  • Step 2: Convert metric Kv to US Cv via formula: Cv = Kv × 1.156;
  • Step 3: Match Cv diagonal line on the GPM-PSI nomograph, calculate actual pipeline differential pressure;
  • Step 4: If pressure drop exceeds design allowable value, upgrade to larger DN butterfly valve to raise overall Kv flow capacity.

Catalog Technical Tips

  • Kv test standard: Clean water 15°C, SG=1, comply with EN 12266-1 & ISO5211;
  • Avoid long-term stable operation under 10°~20° small opening, high pressure drop will cause cavitation and seal abrasion;
  • The pressure drop nomograph only applies to liquid medium; gas & steam flow calculation requires special gas coefficient formula;
  • We provide dual system flow data to meet metric European projects and imperial US standard engineering selection demands.

What is a U-Section Butterfly Valve?

A U-Section Butterfly Valve, also known as a U-Type Butterfly Valve, is a resilient seated butterfly valve with an extended U-shaped body designed for installation between pipeline flanges. The U-shaped profile improves valve alignment, enhances sealing stability, and distributes flange bolt loads more evenly than a standard wafer butterfly valve. It is widely used in water treatment, HVAC, municipal water supply, and industrial pipeline systems.

What is the difference between a U-Type and Wafer Butterfly Valve?

Both valves are installed between flanges, but a U-Type Butterfly Valve features a deeper U-shaped body that provides better flange positioning and improved sealing stability. Compared with a standard wafer butterfly valve, the U-section design reduces installation stress on the seat and offers better performance in large-diameter or frequently maintained pipeline systems.

Why choose a U-Section body?

The U-section body automatically centers the valve between flanges, helping ensure accurate installation and even bolt loading. This design improves sealing reliability, extends seat life, and reduces the risk of leakage caused by uneven flange compression.

Can a U-Type Butterfly Valve be installed at the end of a pipeline?

Most U-Type Butterfly Valves are intended for installation between mating flanges. End-of-line service depends on the valve design, pressure rating, and manufacturer's specifications. If end-of-line isolation is required, a lug butterfly valve is often the preferred solution.

Which flange standards are supported?

Laux U-Section Butterfly Valves are available for a wide range of international flange standards, including EN 1092-1, DIN 2501, BS 4504, ANSI B16.5, AS 4087, and JIS standards, depending on the valve size and project requirements.

What seat materials are available?

Multiple seat materials are available to match different media and temperatures, including EPDM, NBR, High-Temperature EPDM, Viton (FKM), PTFE, and Silicone. Our engineering team can recommend the most suitable seat material based on your application.

Which industries commonly use U-Type Butterfly Valves?

U-Section Butterfly Valves are widely used in municipal water supply, wastewater treatment, HVAC systems, industrial utilities, chemical processing, marine engineering, food processing, irrigation, and general industrial pipeline applications.

What pressure ratings are available?

Standard pressure ratings include PN10, PN16, ANSI Class 150, and other ratings upon request. Valve selection should be based on the operating pressure, temperature, and pipeline design.

Can it be automated with electric actuators?

Yes. Laux U-Section Butterfly Valves are designed with an ISO 5211 mounting pad, making them compatible with manual gear operators, pneumatic actuators, and electric actuators for automated flow control.

Is it suitable for throttling service?

Yes. U-Type Butterfly Valves can be used for both on/off isolation and moderate flow regulation. For precise throttling or severe control applications, our engineering team can recommend the most suitable valve configuration.

What disc materials can be selected?

Laux offers a variety of disc materials, including Nickel-Plated Ductile Iron, CF8 (304 Stainless Steel), CF8M (316 Stainless Steel), Duplex Stainless Steel, Aluminum Bronze, Nylon-Coated Ductile Iron, and PTFE-Lined Disc, depending on the operating media and service conditions.

How is the valve tested before shipment?

Every U-Section Butterfly Valve undergoes strict quality control, including hydrostatic shell testing, seat leakage testing, dimensional inspection, coating inspection, torque verification, and final visual inspection to ensure reliable performance before delivery.

What certifications are available?

Laux Valve manufactures products under an ISO 9001 quality management system and can provide certifications such as CE, as well as project-specific documentation and test reports where applicable. Additional certifications are available depending on customer requirements and product configuration.

Do you provide OEM and private label services?

Yes. We offer comprehensive OEM and private label manufacturing, including customized valve materials, body markings, logo casting, epoxy coating colors, flange drilling standards, packaging, manuals, and branding to meet the needs of distributors and industrial projects worldwide
