36" Double Flange Butterfly Valve — Ductile Iron Body, CF8M Disc, Gear Operated

The 36-inch (DN900) double flange butterfly valve from Laux Valve combines a rugged ductile iron body with a CF8M (316 stainless steel) disc and worm gear operator for reliable flow control in large-diameter water and industrial systems. Designed and tested to AWWA C504 and API 609 standards, this valve delivers bubble-tight shut-off and long-term service life in demanding applications.

The double flange configuration (flanges on both body ends) enables dead-end service and simplifies maintenance by allowing valve removal without disturbing adjacent piping. The CF8M disc provides excellent corrosion resistance in water, wastewater, and mild chemical environments.

Key Features

  • CF8M (316 SS) Disc — Corrosion-resistant stainless steel disc delivers superior performance in water, wastewater, and chemical services compared to standard coated ductile iron discs
  • Ductile Iron Body — ASTM A536 Grade 65-45-12 ductile iron with fusion-bonded epoxy coating (min 250 microns) for long-term corrosion protection
  • Worm Gear Operator — Self-locking worm gearbox provides precise disc positioning and safe operation for large-diameter valves. Handwheel with position indicator standard
  • Double Flange Design — Flanged connections on both ends (ANSI B16.5 Class 150) allow dead-end isolation service and easy installation or removal
  • AWWA C504 Compliant — Designed, manufactured, and tested per AWWA C504 standard for rubber-seated butterfly valves
  • Reinforced EPDM Seat — Full rubber lining with vulcanized bonding provides bubble-tight Class A shut-off per API 598
  • ISO 5211 Mounting Pad — Standardized actuator mounting interface for future upgrade to pneumatic or electric actuation
  • 100% Pressure Tested — Every valve undergoes hydrostatic shell test and seat leakage test per API 598

CF8M Disc Advantage

Unlike standard ductile iron discs with epoxy or nylon coatings that can chip, crack, or degrade over time, the CF8M (316 stainless steel) disc provides:

  • Inherent corrosion resistance — No coating to fail or require touch-up
  • Superior erosion resistance — Withstands higher flow velocities and suspended solids
  • Lower operating torque — Smooth surface finish reduces friction against the rubber seat
  • Longer service life — Outlasts coated discs in aggressive water and chemical environments
  • Full material traceability — Each disc comes with mill test certificate (MTC)

Worm Gear Operator Features

  • Self-locking worm gear mechanism prevents reverse rotation
  • 2" or 2-1/2" handwheel with rotating handle for comfortable operation
  • Visual open/closed position indicator
  • Weatherproof housing (IP65 rated)
  • ISO 5211 input flange for actuator conversion
  • Mechanical travel stops in open and closed positions

Applications

  • Municipal water treatment and distribution
  • HVAC and district cooling systems
  • Industrial process water and cooling
  • Fire protection water supply
  • Irrigation and agricultural water systems
  • Wastewater treatment plants
  • Power plant cooling water circuits

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between double flange and wafer butterfly valves?

Double flange butterfly valves have flanged connections on both ends of the body, allowing dead-end service and easy installation without flange spreaders. Wafer valves are clamped between two pipe flanges and cannot provide dead-end isolation. Double flange valves are preferred for larger diameters (24" and above) where installation and maintenance access are important.

Why choose a CF8M disc over an epoxy-coated disc?

CF8M (316 SS) provides inherent corrosion resistance that does not rely on coating integrity. If the epoxy coating on a coated disc is damaged during installation or operation, corrosion begins immediately at the damage point. CF8M discs also offer lower operating torque, longer service life, and full material traceability with mill test certificates.

What is the torque range for the gear operator?

The worm gear operator for a 36" valve delivers a mechanical advantage of approximately 40:1 to 60:1, reducing the handwheel force to a comfortable 30-50 Nm for normal operation. The gearbox is sized to handle the maximum breakaway torque of the valve under full rated pressure differential.

Can this valve be upgraded to pneumatic or electric actuation later?

Yes. The valve is equipped with an ISO 5211 standard mounting pad. The gearbox can be removed and replaced with a pneumatic or electric actuator without modifying the valve. This future-proofs your installation for automation upgrades.

What is the delivery time for a 36" double flange butterfly valve?

Standard delivery for the 36" valve is 15-25 working days depending on the configuration and quantity. Custom material options (such as Hypalon lining or 316 SS body) may extend lead time by 5-10 working days. Contact our sales team for current lead times.
