A wafer butterfly valve has no threaded holes in its body. Instead, installation requires long stud bolts that span from one pipe flange, through the valve center bore, to the opposite pipe flange. The valve is essentially "sandwiched" between the two flanges by compressing these long studs.
A U-section butterfly valve has a U-shaped flange ring at each face with drilled and tapped holes. Standard bolts (not studs) thread directly into these tapped holes from the pipe flanges.
Field Tip: For a DN600 PN10 valve, wafer installation requires handling 20 studs averaging 250-300mm long each. A U-section installation uses 20 standard bolts (120-150mm), which are much easier to align and torque, especially in tight pipe racks.
The most common installation error with butterfly valves is misalignment between the valve disc and the pipe flanges. Even a 2-3mm offset can cause the disc to scrape against the pipe bore, damaging the seat and causing leakage.
Wafer valves have no locating mechanism. The valve body is smaller in diameter than the pipe flanges, so it can shift during bolt tightening. The installer must manually hold the valve centered while tightening — often requiring one person to hold and another to torque. If the valve shifts during the first torque pass, the misalignment becomes permanent.
U-section valves have a U-shaped flange face that matches the outer diameter of the pipe flange. The bolts pass through the pipe flange and thread directly into the valve body, naturally pulling the valve into perfect alignment as bolts are tightened. No special centering tools or extra hands required.
Verdict: U-section valves eliminate centering as a failure mode. Wafer valves require experienced crews and careful torquing to avoid misalignment. For critical or large-diameter lines (DN400+), the centering advantage of U-section alone often justifies the cost difference.
One of the most frequently overlooked installation requirements is whether the valve must provide dead-end (isolation) service — holding pressure on one side while the downstream pipe is open to atmosphere for maintenance.
