How to Select the Right Butterfly Valve for Your Application

Selecting the correct butterfly valve for your specific application is crucial for ensuring reliable performance, long service life, and cost-effective operation. With multiple types, materials, and configurations available, understanding the key selection criteria will help you make the right choice.

Step 1: Determine the Valve Type

Wafer Butterfly Valve: The most economical option, designed to fit between two pipe flanges. Suitable for general purpose isolation and flow control where the valve is permanently installed between flanges. Best for HVAC, water treatment, and general industrial applications.

Lug Butterfly Valve: Features threaded inserts for dead-end service capability. Ideal for end-of-line applications, fire protection systems, and applications where one side of the pipeline may need to be disconnected.

Double Flange Butterfly Valve: Has flanged ends that bolt directly to pipe flanges. Suitable for larger diameters and higher pressure applications. Commonly used in water distribution and heavy industrial systems.

PTFE Lined Butterfly Valve: Features a corrosion-resistant lining for handling aggressive chemical media. Essential for chemical processing and pharmaceutical applications.

Step 2: Choose the Right Materials

Body Materials: GGG40 (ductile iron) is standard for most applications. GGG50 offers higher strength for larger sizes and higher pressures. Stainless steel bodies are available for corrosive environments.

Disc Materials: Ductile iron with nylon coating for standard applications, SS304 for better corrosion resistance, CF8M for maximum corrosion resistance in aggressive environments, and SS316 for food and pharmaceutical applications.

Seat Materials: EPDM for water and general applications (-20°C to +120°C), Buna-N for oil and fuel applications, Viton/FKM for high temperature and chemical resistance, PTFE for the widest chemical compatibility.

Step 3: Consider Operating Conditions

  • Pressure Rating: PN10, PN16, Class 150, or higher
  • Temperature Range: Ensure all components can withstand the operating temperature
  • Media Type: Water, gas, chemical, slurry, or food product
  • Flow Characteristics: On-off or throttling service requirements
  • Actuation Method: Lever handle, gearbox, pneumatic actuator, or electric actuator

Step 4: Verify Standards and Certifications

Ensure the valve meets relevant industry standards: API 609, DIN EN 558, ISO 5211 mounting pad, ANSI B16.5 flange dimensions, and AWWA C504 for water works applications.

Step 5: Consider Total Cost of Ownership
