Design and Construction

Butterfly Valve: Features a rotating disc that turns 90 degrees to open or close the flow path. The disc is mounted on a shaft and is positioned in the center of the pipe. Butterfly valves are compact, lightweight, and have a short face-to-face dimension.

Gate Valve: Uses a wedge-shaped gate that moves perpendicular to the flow path. The gate slides up and down within the valve body to open or close. Gate valves are larger, heavier, and require more installation space than butterfly valves.

Operation and Speed

Butterfly valves require only a quarter-turn (90 degrees) to go from fully open to fully closed, making them much faster to operate than gate valves, which require multiple turns of the handwheel. This makes butterfly valves ideal for applications where quick shut-off is required.

Flow Characteristics

When fully open, gate valves provide unobstructed flow with minimal pressure drop, as the gate retracts completely into the bonnet. Butterfly valves, however, have the disc remaining in the flow path even when fully open, causing a slightly higher pressure drop. For most general applications, this difference is negligible.

Shut-Off Capability

Modern resilient-seated butterfly valves provide bubble-tight shut-off, outperforming many gate valves in sealing capability. The rubber seat compresses against the disc edge, creating a positive seal. Gate valves rely on metal-to-metal seating, which may allow minor leakage over time.

Cost Comparison

Butterfly valves are significantly more cost-effective than gate valves, especially in larger sizes. The initial purchase price is lower, and the lightweight design reduces installation costs. Gate valves become increasingly expensive as size increases due to the amount of material required.

Maintenance

Butterfly valves are easier to maintain, with replaceable seats and accessible components. Gate valves require more extensive disassembly for maintenance and may need specialized tools for seat lapping or replacement.
